Nostalgic Lunchbox Treats

Category: Culinary

Author: Nicholas Dysarz, Culinary Director

Do you remember the days when the lunch bell rang, signaling the excitement of discovering the treasures hidden in your lunch box? Join me as I take a trip down memory lane, revisiting some items—some I’d rather forget—and the iconic snacks and treats that fueled my childhood adventures and satisfied my youthful cravings.

As a kid, I ate school lunches because they provided a hot meal every day, and I was on the school-assisted lunch program. I’m sure that’s a deciding factor for families today as well. The strangest thing I saw on the school menu was chili and cinnamon rolls. I tried them, but I am not a fan.

If I could create a school lunch item from scratch, it would be Salisbury steak, now in my monthly rotation. The ultimate school lunch menu should include two scoops of rice, one scoop of mac salad, one piece of teriyaki chicken, two pieces of teriyaki beef, and three fried shrimp.

Three meal prep containers filled with a variety of vegetables, including kimchi, zucchini, yellow squash, and seasoned bean sprouts, placed on a granite countertop.

From Handheld Favorites to Nostalgic Treats: Savoring Culinary Memories

My secret trick to making the ultimate lunchbox meal is to cater to the things kids like and will eat, like items they can dip or handheld items. By including items from all food categories, you can ensure a well-balanced and nutritional meal. The lunch packaging can also make a difference; many people eat with their eyes first.

I would like to see a breakfast scramble or French toast sticks with syrup for dipping in a breakfast box. For a dinner box, include curry and rice.

Even though we’ve traded our lunch boxes for grown-up alternatives and our tastes have evolved, the nostalgia of those beloved treats still reminds us of the innocence and delight of youth. I hope you can find some classic favorites and discover new tempting treats every time you visit The Rushwood Senior Living Bistro or Country Kitchen and that you never stop making culinary memories.
