2. Named for Wichita native, Hattie McDaniel. Born to formerly enslaved parents as the youngest of 13 children, she built a life as an actress, a singer/songwriter, and a comedienne. Though she was best known for her role as Mammy in the epic 1939 historical romance, Gone with the Wind, she appeared in more than 300 films, and earned two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Hattie also held the honor of being the first black woman to sing on the radio in the US and the first African American to win an Oscar. As Hattie once said in her Academy Award winning role as Mammy, “You come on and be good and eat just a little, honey!” And here at Hattie’s, we invite you to do the same. (But you can eat as much as you want.)
