Welcoming With Heart: How Resident Ambassadors Transform the Move-In Experience

Category: Senior Living

Author: Rochelle Collette, Resident Services Director

Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. There is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships. There can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections and offer encouragement. They also provide peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one.

Their willingness to reach out matters. By sharing their experiences and inviting others into community life, they help turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at The Rushwood, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make. They help new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

Calming Move-In Jitters With a Warm Welcome

Moving into a new community can feel overwhelming. New residents may be adjusting to a different environment. They may also feel a sense of loss after leaving a previous home. At the same time, they are working to make a new apartment feel familiar. A successful move-in begins by recognizing those emotions. It also means surrounding each new resident with warmth and support.

That welcome begins with thoughtful details. New residents are greeted with their names already on their apartments. They also receive a welcome bag of gifts and a directory. These touches help them get to know their neighbors. A sense of belonging begins from the moment they arrive.

Resident Ambassadors often become part of the welcome before move-in day. During a tour or meal visit, the Sales Team may introduce a prospect to an ambassador. Ambassadors also help guide the “Welcome to The Rushwood Family” sheet. This sheet offers helpful insight about community life.

These residents are experts at creating a warm welcome. They also help calm move-in jitters. By showing their apartments, answering questions, and offering reassurance, they share guidance that comes from real experience.

Building Friendship Before Move-In Day

Some of the most meaningful welcomes come from kind and friendly residents. Resident Ambassadors are also motivating and willing to listen. Chosen for their ability to care for others, they bring a steady presence to the welcome process.

Recently, a prospect began visiting The Rushwood and attended an event. During that first event, an ambassador made contact and sat with her. The two formed a personal connection. Since then, they have continued talking outside community events. When the prospect attends another event, she looks for that ambassador. She knows she has someone who will listen to her fears about moving.

Two senior residents on the Resident Services team smile brightly at The Rushwood Senior Living.

That friendship began before move-in day. This made it especially meaningful. Having a trusted connection already in place can make moving feel less intimidating. It can also make the transition feel more hopeful.

Residents often respond quickly to other residents because the invitation feels personal. When team members invite someone to an event, it may feel expected. When another resident offers the invitation, it feels different. The new neighbor knows they will have someone to sit with. They also have someone to enjoy the experience beside.

A resident’s enthusiasm also matters. It shows that an event is more than something on a calendar. Their excitement can help a new neighbor see the event as something worth enjoying, too.

Resident Ambassadors help shape the culture of The Rushwood. Residents create the heartbeat of community life. They stay active in events and guide new residents toward programs they may enjoy. Their example also reflects the importance of an accepting, diverse, and welcoming community. Beyond welcoming newcomers, they support Acts of Service volunteerism. Many also help with outreach, event hosting, group leading, and teaching.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents. They help build the culture of our community. Through kindness, friendship, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

The move-in process may only last a few days. The relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
