As Resident Services Director at The Rushwood Senior Living, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community transforms senior living from a place to stay into a place to truly thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and even the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just a nice-to-have. Instead, it is essential for fostering well-being, joy, and purpose.
Creating community starts with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group event, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, these moments strengthen relationships and help residents feel like they belong.

From my perspective, every interaction is an opportunity to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully. They also experience the emotional and social support that comes from genuine human connection.
To me, community in a senior living setting means a deep sense of belonging. It reflects the understanding that we are in this life together. We look out for our neighbors, support one another, and help each person find purpose. It is the pride behind the words, “We’re a family.”
Building strong community connections is essential when someone transitions into senior living. Many residents leave behind longtime homes, familiar neighbors, cherished churches, and their favorite places around town. This change can feel overwhelming and emotional. However, engaging with friendly faces and a welcoming peer group eases the stress and creates a comforting sense of home.
At The Rushwood, residents build community through an active ambassador group that welcomes new residents, leads Acts of Service, and supports outreach initiatives. Residents help plan the monthly events calendar and often host their own activities. As a result, connections form naturally as they join exercise classes, active games, creative arts, and group outings.
Connecting with the broader community is equally important. For example, our residents read to local children at the public library and welcome police officers for Coffee with a Cop. They also enjoy guest speakers and entertainers who bring learning and enrichment into our community. Signature events such as Safe Trick-or-Treat, the Annual Easter Egg Hunt, and the Holiday Tree Lighting welcome families from across the area. These gatherings help establish The Rushwood as a valued part of the Wichita and Andover communities.

One of our most beloved activities is the weekly beachball game between assisted living residents and clients of Starkey, Inc., the oldest community-based nonprofit in Sedgwick County serving people with disabilities. Residents and Starkey clients laugh, play, and encourage one another. This heartwarming display of acceptance and joy shows the power of simple, shared moments.
As new residents move in, we take great pride in connecting them with every opportunity available. Each person receives a welcome bag, goodies from our in-house therapy team, and information about daily life at The Rushwood. Additionally, they are introduced to the Arrow App, which keeps them connected to events, dining options, and important announcements. It is an honor to support such a caring and vibrant community, and it is a joy to watch our residents extend that same warmth to every new neighbor.

At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful interaction enriches the lives of our residents. As Resident Services Director at The Rushwood Senior Living, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to foster these connections can transform daily life. They turn our building into a true home and create moments that residents and families will treasure.
By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and a sense of belonging, we’re not just planning events. Instead, we are building a vibrant, supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, the connections we nurture make all the difference.
