Staff Spotlight: Why We Choose Senior Living Culinary

Every great meal starts with someone who cares.

Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.

In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.

We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

Rooted in Family and Trust

As Culinary Director at Rushwood, my love for food started with my grandparents. I was raised by them and began learning how to cook from my grandmother when I was three years old. We would wake up at 5:00 a.m. to make my grandfather our favorite egg salad sandwiches.

In many ways, this work feels like what I was born to do. Culinary in senior living brings together food, family, care, and connection. It allows me to serve residents with the same heart that first drew me into the kitchen.

Residents have taught me the value of transparency and understanding. Many do not have food handling backgrounds, so they may not always know the challenges of running a commercial kitchen. That is why open communication matters.

One of the first things I did after arriving at Rushwood was invite the Resident Council on a kitchen tour. I wanted them to understand where their food comes from. That transparency helped build a trusting and fruitful relationship between residents and the culinary team.

Serving With Transparency and Effort

One favorite tradition is Candlelight Dinner. These events give the culinary team a chance to swing for the fence. Trying something new can feel challenging, but it also creates excitement.

Candlelight Dinners also create a unique chance to collaborate with residents. Food can reflect their heritage, memories, and life experiences. When residents see pieces of their own stories reflected in a meal, the experience becomes even more meaningful.

Success in senior living culinary starts with listening. It also takes honesty about what is possible. Each resident should feel valued as an individual, and each team member should feel respected and supported.

Taking care of the culinary team matters, too. When team members feel cared for, they can better care for residents. Effort is something people can feel. When residents see that someone is actively trying to take care of them, it gives them peace of mind.

That peace of mind is what makes the work matter. It shows residents that they are not just being served. They are being considered, heard, and cared for every day.

Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.

Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
