Chef Shares Sentiments

From Dishwasher to Director

As Culinary Director at The Rushwood Senior Living, I approach each day with passion, not just purpose. I face new challenges, hear new stories, and find fresh reasons to feel grateful. I’m excited to share how I arrived in this role, what fuels my dedication, and what a typical day looks like in our community. My work goes beyond preparing meals—it centers on building connections, creating purpose, and making a real difference where it counts.

I began my culinary journey about a decade ago as a dishwasher in a senior living community. From there, I advanced step by step, gaining experience in hotels, casinos, and restaurants. Eventually, I was ready for the next chapter, and Arrow offered me the opportunity to lead as Culinary Director.

The experience that shaped me most came from my time at Atria Senior Living. There, I learned every level of the operation. That exposure helped me develop a deep understanding of team needs and how to meet them. It also gave me the confidence I rely on today to lead an efficient kitchen.

Cooking with Purpose and Personal Touch

What I enjoy most about senior living is the stories. Every resident carries a lifetime of memories. I approach each one like a puzzle—discovering their preferences and using flavor and texture to surprise and delight them. Creating something that makes someone feel seen and celebrated is incredibly fulfilling.

Each morning, I start by greeting every member of my team. I make a point to check in with them, not just about work but about how they’re doing. That minute of real connection helps me assess our team’s energy and encourages ongoing, open communication.

For anyone considering a culinary career in senior living, here’s my advice: find your feedback loop. Some residents may be quiet, while others share openly. Identify those who offer honest, constructive feedback. Their input will help you fine-tune your operation and grow as a leader.

A Recipe for Success

To me, success means happy residents, a satisfied team—and still having a little sanity left by the end of the day.

At day’s end, I take the greatest pride in knowing I’ve contributed something meaningful—whether it’s a favorite dish, a heartfelt conversation, or a comforting moment. Thank you for welcoming me into your community and allowing me to serve at your table. I’m truly honored.
